VVOB – education for development is an international non-profit organisation with over 35 years of experience in quality education. Through capacity development, VVOB provides support to ministries of education in Africa, Asia and South America to improve (initial) professional development of teachers and school leaders in early childhood, primary, general secondary, and technical and vocational education.

Vision

Quality education is the foundation for development. VVOB contributes to an equitable world in which governments are capacitated to respect, protect and fulfil the right to quality education for every learner, without any form of discrimination.

VVOB’s definition of quality education

Quality education provides all learners with capacities they require to become economically productive, develop sustainable livelihoods, contribute to peaceful and democratic societies and enhance individual wellbeing. The required learning outcomes vary according to context. In general, completion of basic education must mean a minimum level of literacy and numeracy, basic scientific knowledge and life skills is achieved. Capacity development to improve the quality of teachers and other education stakeholders is crucial throughout this process.

Mission

VVOB ensures the improvement of the quality of education:

  • through capacity building of government education actors and other education actors in the global South. This is achieved through technical assistance provided by local and international experts.
  • by connecting these actors in the global South with each other, and connecting actors in the North with actors in the South. This way, VVOB facilitates knowledge exchange between partners with a similar mission.
  • by inspiring education actors in Belgium and the global South on equity-related issues in education, based on worldwide research, experiences and expertise.

VVOB’s 6 crucial dimensions of quality education

  1. Equity: personal and social circumstances (such as gender, ethnic background or socio-economic status) do not form barriers to learning.
  2. Contextualisation and relevance: solutions for and changes to the education system is based on the real needs of a country and/or community.
  3. Child-friendly teaching and learning: education puts learners at its centre and helps them to reach their full potential.
  4. Sustainability: capacity development of local education authorities institutionalises changes.
  5. Balanced approach: the development of a balanced set of skills in learners contributes to their economic productiveness and sustainable livelihood, and to a peaceful and democratic society.
  6. Learning outcomes: a results-oriented approach ensures learners acquire a critical level of skills.
VVOB firmly believes that quality education can only be achieved if equity, and gender equity in particular, is ensured
